Growing Roses from Cuttings

Growing roses from cuttings is an interesting topic in the gardening subject.  We have read various articles and watched few videos on growing roses from cuttings.

Most of the articles and videos talk about size, diameter and length of cuttings among other precautions of planting roses.

Experiment:

In order to test these precautions and do list while growing roses from cuttings, we did perform following experiments:

Growing Roses from Cuttings

Rose Cuttings

  1. One of selected cutting was very thin;
  2. We selected a short cutting of few inches only;
  3. A cutting had branches which were not removed;
  4. Some cuttings were planted with other plants in the pot;
  5. Some of the cuttings were covered with plastic bottles. This is done to maintain humid environment inside the bottle;
  6. Some of the cuttings were kept in normal environment without any humidity. Although there was natural humidity at that time;
  7. Some of the plants were fertilized with NPK and others were not provided any fertilizer; and
  8. Some of pots were kept in dark and some in normal environment with sun light.

Results:

All of the cutting end up in flower producing plants but the differentiating factor we believe is the humidity and fertilizer.  The plants who were provided with humidity by plastic bottle covering and NPK fertilizer, were the first one to propagate.  Others have shown results over three weeks.  But fortunately, all of these were propagated.

Now we understand that all these precautions were busted and you may grow roses with some simple steps as provided below.

We are also sharing a video that has captured most of this activity.

How to Plant Roses – Step Wise Guide

Step 1: Take plastic pet bottle and cut the bottom of the bottle.  Let the bottle cap intact (do not remove it).

Step 2: Cut the rose branches and remove the leaves from these.

Step 3: Make a hole in the soil of the pot where you want to propagate the rose plant.  Insert the cutting made in Step 2.

Step 3a: If you have NPK fertilizer or any natural one, use it while inserting the cuttings.  This step is not necessary.  It just helps in saving time for successful and early propagation.

Step 4: Cover the cutting with plastic bottle as prepared in Step 1.

Step 4a: You may keep the cutting in normal environment if the outside temperature is low (not near and around freezing temperature) and humid.  Under these circumstances, step 4 and 1 are not required.  But for early propagation, you may cover the cuttings.

Step 5: Keep the pot hydrated all the time and just observe the changes in the cutting.

Step 6: Within few days, you will observe the propagation and leaves from cuttings.  This is the time to remove bottle and you may have to keep it in sunlight of few hours a day.

Step 7: Within couple of months, you may have a rose plant that will grow beautiful rose flowers.
